WHY REMOVE THE BEAD?

Eliminate the bead. Eliminate the problem.

External HDPE beads are removed primarily for aesthetic reasons, to allow for easier slip-lining into older pipes, to enable better inspection of the weld joint, and sometimes for specific structural/functional needs like in conduit systems, though internal bead removal is more common for flow optimization. The removal process, called debeading, creates a flush surface, improving performance in specific applications without harming the pipe's pressure rating.

Key Reasons for External Bead Removal

  • Aesthetics: For visible applications, like bridge cable covers, removing the bead provides a cleaner, smoother look.

  • Slip-lining: When inserting a new, smaller HDPE pipe into an existing larger pipe, removing the external bead allows the new pipe to pass through more easily.

  • Inspection: Removing the external bead is necessary to perform non-destructive testing (NDT) methods, like microwave scanning, to check for fusion defects.

  • Conduit Systems: In cable conduit work, removing the bead can sometimes reduce material costs by allowing smaller pipes to be used, though this is also a benefit of internal removal.

Key Reasons for Internal Bead Removal

  • Flow Optimization: Removing the internal bead creates a smoother interior, preventing blockages and improving flow in low-grade gravity lines.

  • Pigging Operations: A smooth bore allows pipeline "pigs" (tools for cleaning/inspection) to pass through without getting stuck

It is common to remove the interior bead in gravity sewer applications where the slope of the pipe is <2% grade. Removing the internal/external bead is an observed and effective practice in mining operations, horizontal directional drilling, pipeline pigging operations, swagelining, sliplining, duct and conduit work, and dual containment systems.
